988 on Student Identification Cards Map

The 988 Suicide and Crisis Lifeline (988) is a free, confidential, 24/7 service for mental health, substance abuse, or suicide crises – or any type of emotional distress. Anyone can call, text or chat 988, but 988 is especially important for groups at higher risk of suicide, including youth and young adults

States can raise awareness of 988 by requiring public schools, charter schools, and/or institutions of higher education to add 988 and/or other crisis helplines to student identification cards. Suicide rates among youth and young adults have declined in the years after the launch of 988, and recent studies suggest that 988 is an effective intervention among youth and young adults. 988 works, making it crucial to raise awareness of this life-saving resource.

As of July 2026, more than half of the U.S. requires 988 to be listed on student IDs for at least some grade levels in middle school through college.
